Weight is your caravan’s empty weight. This is the base weight and excludes water, food, gear and personal belongings.
ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) is the maximum loaded weight. This is measured with the caravan unhitched from your towing vehicle and sitting on its jockey wheel. Never exceed this.
Ball weight affects towing stability and safety. You must not exceed the tow ball mass capacity. Too little and you’ll have dangerous swaying. Too much and you’ll overload your vehicle’s rear.
Australian towing laws are simple for caravans under 2000kg. All you need is a full driving licence for the tow vehicle you’re driving. No special endorsements required. But there are restrictions for new drivers.
Braking requirements depend on weight. 751 – 2000 kg GTM – an efficient braking system on both wheels on at least one axle. Most caravans in this range come with electric brakes as standard.
Safety chains become mandatory. Trailers under 2500 kg when loaded must have at least one safety chain. These prevent runaway incidents if coupling fails.
Toyota Kluger Hybrid is a great choice. The best thing about the Kluger is it’s a great car for daily driving but its modest towing capacity of 2000kg gives it the flexibility to tow some great caravans a few times a year.
Subaru Outback XT offers more versatility with more capacity. The latest update to the Outback XT increased capacity from 2100 to 2400kg opening up more towing options.
Electric options are expanding fast. Currently the largest of Kia’s EVs has the largest capacity of any plug-in hybrid electric vehicle on the market. Rated to tow 2500kg.
Consider ball weight limitations. One problem many small to medium SUV owners face though is tow ball download. Cars like the Skoda Kodiaq which won UK caravan magazine’s Best Tow Car award can tow 2000kg but only with 100kg on the ball.
Pop-tops have advantages: Lower towing height improves fuel economy and reduces wind resistance. Storage is easier in standard garages. Setup time increases slightly but is still manageable.
Hard-tops have benefits: Better insulation for year round comfort. No setup required at each stop. Generally more storage space inside. Structural strength is often superior.
Weather considerations: Pop-tops excel in hot climates with natural ventilation. Hard-tops better suited to cooler climates and wet weather camping.
